summary
I thought that if I showed you what I was capable of you might see something in me. Something special.
Varian is an alchemist, specializing in chemistry and engineering, and a genius who's mind has long since outgrown his body. He's empathetic, caring and proactive, albeit socially awkward and clumsy, but reckless and irresponsible with his inventions. The end result is that while he's driven by a desire to both make his father proud and to improve the lives of the people around him, he lacks supervision and his creations often go awry at the last minute. As he's grown up in a small farming village, he's also a bit of a black sheep, with rumors going about that he's a "mysterious and dangerous wizard."
Later on in the series and as he grows older, he sheds some of these traits. He still suffers from taking on too much responsibility and is weighed down by regret and trauma, but he loses some of that teenage awkwardness (though not entirely, he's a dork.) Moreover, he's more careful and responsible with his creations. In short, he matures and starts to come into his own as he nears adulthood.
His age and maturity level varies based on his canonpoint. He ranges from 14-18. For transparency, I follow the timeline as outlined here. Varian is 14 at the start of the series and 15 by the end of the first season. He's 16 at the start of the third season and 18 by the end of the series. I play him from post-season three for shipping, but otherwise default to mid-post season one. Canonpoint is flexible.

villain arc, with or without redemption. (click for more detail)
▸ in general, i would like to play out a more cohesive villain arc than what we got.▸ it can be new cr, or it can be people who he knew before turning. the sticking point is that his conflict is due to neglect so it'd have to be one more person who just left him to his own devices. i wanna do something based on this art.
▸ likewise, i'm happy to play him either as the opposing side of the conflict (a hero/villain pair up, someone sent after him that realizes he's harmless, a bystander who doesn't know, whatever,) or teaming up with another villain.
▸ i prefer an eventual redemption arc to go along with this, but i'm fine without one! i enjoy playing antagonists in general so i'm flexible here.

▸ i would like to explore the idea of moon varian! after the sundrop failed to free his father from the amber, him chasing after the moon opal would be the next sensible step, especially given his planned arcs for the second season.▸ the moonstone's lore is an absolute clusterfuck so we can always discuss how to handle it, but general things i'm interested in are the corruption aspect of it, along with the incantations. the lore was left half-finished, so lots to play with there.
season 2-3 rewrite (click for more detail)
▸ we have confirmation that he was supposed to be a driving factor in the second season and had several plots threads that tied back to him, so some ideas:▸ please... drag him on the trip with you. it's been done in a lot of fic, but i would really love to get the opportunity to play it out and see how things develop. he was the keeper of the lore (tm) too, so there's a lot of fun plot things that could be done if desired. but honestly i just love the idea.
▸ moon varian (see above.) there's a lot of ways that this could be built up to. it could be that their reunion comes in the dark kingdom and we get a conflict from that. there's plenty of things we can do here depending on what themes are wanted.
▸ alternatively, just having him being an opposing figure trying to keep rapunzel from getting the moonstone and trying to find a way to save his father, or whatever. we can work it out. let them be rivals that keep running into each other and have to mend things.
season 3 rewrite (moonsandra) (click for more detail)
▸ cassandra's villain arc was a lot of wasted potential, so i'd love to explore other possibilities with that! give cassandra a more solid motive and plan of action than what we got.▸ cassandra & varian team up that leads to him defecting at some point - this seems to have been one of the ideas that the writers had but discarded. or alternatively, i'd just as happily see both of them come to their senses at the same time.
▸ something where varian winds up stuck with cass directly post-cassandra's return? a scenario where she reforms early? there's a lot that could be done here depending on what we're looking for!
▸ honestly i have 9000 ideas but in general, s3 had so much potential, i would love to capitalize on it. nothing left to lose rewired my brain chemistry.
▸ alternatively, i would be interested in post-s3 interactions!

▸ the above is on the darker side since i'm still building up specific ideas that aren't fueled by fanart, but i would also love more positive situations. he's a a good kid, he's enthusiastic, and he tends to take things in stride. let him make friends or go on adventures or anything else!▸ i am open to castmates and crosscanon for all of the above ideas! for the ones that are canon specific, we'll tweak it to fit our needs.
▸ i'm fine with canon blending, aus, and jamjar scenarios. i do tend to have a preference for the former, but i'm cool with throwing characters in an abandoned city or a spooky house or whatever and see what happens. i'd love to play with anyone though!
▸ as far as castmates go, i'd love any of them! i'm particularly interested in quirin, any of the brotherhood members, eugene (team awesome is everything,) cassandra, rapunzel, and lance. frederic or andrew would be interesting to explore too.
▸ for anything shipping related, i am primarily in playing him at 17+ unless we know each other, but if there's something you're interested in we can chat. looking for characters around the same age or older. i enjoy age gap! i don't have any particular canon ships for him, but i'd be open to exploring cassarian.
▸ i am not interested in any teacher/student, mentor, or parent/child dynamics. i enjoy bouncing him off of older characters, and he needs guidance and support, so anything else is welcome!!
